North Wales is known for its breathtaking scenery and stunning coastline, attracting millions of visitors each year. With dozens of beautiful beaches right here in North Wales, visitors are often spoilt for choice.
We asked our readers to name their favourite North Wales beach and it’s no surprise that the responses came flooding in. There were plenty of suggestions from people who couldn’t wait to share which beach they felt deserved the title of “best in North Wales.”
After sifting through the results, one beach came out on top. Take a look at the top five North Wales beaches, as voted for by our readers, and what they had to say about them:
Although not voted for by our readers, Traeth Harlech deserves a special mention after being deemed the “most peaceful, calming and beautiful place on earth”. Tripadvisor scores it as the top beach in North Wales.
1: Llandudno
Lland ud no is Wales’ largest resort. Based between the Great Orme and Little Orme in Conwy, with the choice of Llandudno North Shore beach and the sand dune West Shore Beach.
Llandudno has plenty of modern attractions as well as keeping its Victorian and Edwardian history. The North Wales town is very popular with the locals and a favourite tourist destination.
One of the reasons for its popularity is due to the coastline’s amazing beaches and bays, fantastic for a family day out with lots of attractions and activities to choose from.
Some comments from our readers were: “Beautiful Prom, West Shore beach with fantastic views. Fantastic walks around and on the Ormes, traditional pier, toboggan and chair lift.”
“A good all rounder”.
2: Barmouth
Barmouth is southern Snowdonia’s most popular seaside resort. In summer, its big sandy beach is a magnet for visitors, yet there’s so much space along miles of unbroken sands that it never gets overcrowded.
A land train runs along the promenade and there are traditional donkey rides, swing boats and amusement arcades, but the beach itself is vast and easily big enough to get away from it all. There is good disabled access to the beach and all leisure amenities, including a full range of shops, cafes and pubs are within a short distance of the beach.
“Beautiful golden sands and beautiful cleans water, together with surrounding magnificent countryside.”
“Amazing scenery, the mountains come down to the sea. Beautiful clean beaches, friendly people and delicious food at the many cafes and bars”.
3: Rhos-on-Sea
The newly created ‘Welsh Riviera’ beach that’s suddenly the ‘best in North Wales’. For the most part, locals reckon the end product was well worth the effort – and the night-time noise worth the inconvenience.
“It looks absolutely amazing!” said one resident. “It looks like the French Riviera! But Welsh!”
Rhos on Sea’s imported beach is designed to become the main sea defence along this section of the coast, protecting not only the seawall but also the properties behind it. Linking up with the beach at Colwyn Bay, which itself was imported almost a decade ago, there is now a glorious sweep of golden sand around the bay that’s reminiscent of the resorts’ heydays.
It was called a “classy area” with “clean beaches” by our readers.
4: Abersoch
Originally a fishing port, now a popular seaside resort, Abersoch has a large, relatively sheltered sandy beach on the southeast facing side of the Llyn Peninsula. It is extremely popular with tourists in the summer who flock to the Gwynedd town in search of sun, sand, and good times.
The beach is considered to be “safe” with no severe currents or rips in normal conditions and a motor boat exclusion zone provides a secure area for bathers. The beach is a renowned centre for sailing and watersports and the town hosts an annual summer jazz festival, a regatta and music festival.
Beach huts can be rented by the day or week; enquire at the beach cafes – but can be a little pricey.
A reader who has been “holidaying here and surrounding areas for 60 years” said it “has everything you want”.
“Lovely clean beach and sea and nice places for food and drink” said another.
5: Trearddur Bay
Trearddur or Trearddur Bay is a village, seaside resort and community south of Holyhead on the west coast of Holy Island off the north-west coast of Anglesey in Wales. The community includes the small settlement of Penrhosfeilw and the Refail Farm estate
A great beach with plenty of sand especially when the tide is out, and also several rockpools to investigate. The area has plenty of parking for either a short or long stay on the beach, which is “just like being abroad” according to one reader.
“An amazing place” in your own words, when voting which is the best beach in North Wales, one person flatly stated Trearddur Bay is the best, “just because it is”.
