Residents Want Abandoned Truck Removed From Beach

Sunny skies, still clear blue water and white sand — perfect scenery for anyone in the village of Tamuning to sit by and enjoy.

But the scenic view just passed the Alupang Beach Park is marred by a truck burned, stripped apart, and left abandoned.

Mayor Louise Rivera said she is aware of the eyesore and the numerous calls from residents to have it removed. Although she is already working on getting it removed, it will take some time.

“At this time, to remove any abandoned or junk vehicles, we work together with Guam Police Department to find the owner of these vehicles are, to get in touch with them, see what their plans are with the vehicles so if nothing, we’ll get it removed,” she said.

She added another reason for the delay: her office is awaiting their purchase orders from the Mayors’ Council of Guam and many of their vendors are still busy with Typhoon Mawar recovery.

“Our purchase orders just ended so again, we’re waiting for the new ones and we will start going out, start up the program again and have a lot of these abandoned and junk vehicles removed,” Rivera said.

Among the rusted-out and charred remains of the truck are clothes. It appears that someone apparently has been living there as well.

“We were told that there’s an individual that sleeps in that truck and so that every time that our people go over there, they’re not finding anybody there,” Rivera said.

The mayor anticipates the program to pick up the abandoned vehicles starting in November.

“I know that one is a concern and it’s along the beachside,” Rivera said. “I know Coastal Management, I’m going to see if they’re aware of it as well and what will be their plan and certain areas where that truck is, is private property,” Rivera said. “It’s a concern for all of us and we just wish people would respect our island and all the different properties and not leave their mess, especially that junk vehicle.”
