Europe’s “best beach city,” underestimated and “better than Barcelona”

Finding a beach holiday in Europe isn’t an issue. The options are endless when it comes to finding somewhere to sun it up and sit back and relax But as rammed with fellow tourists around this time of year, trying to find that unknown gem can be tricky.

But there is one European city that may not be on the average traveller’s radar. The Hague in the Netherlands is more widely associated with politics due to the fact it is the home of the United Nations International Court of Justice as well as being the place where the majority of the Dutch government is based.

But The Hague is also home to the stunning Scheveningen Beach. Scheveningen Beach is full of bars, pubs and resorts all waiting for a visit. Sit back and relax as you hear the waves crashing onto the seafront and take in the views of the exquisite pier and Ferris wheel. A walk along the 382-metre De Pier Scheveningen could take you a while but the views will be worth it on a sunny day.

There are still other beaches that are considered worthy of a visit if the more popular Scheveningen beach gets a bit too much. Zuiderstrand is considered the more ‘peaceful’ beach according to The Telegraph, which describes the views of the ruins of the Second World War. It is also a nudist beach so if that tickles your fancy, feel free to explore.

Iconic museums aren’t in short supply once you’re done with the beach: The Mauritshuis Royal Picture Gallery, Maduroda and the Escher in Het Paleis are steeped in history and will provide you with the knowledge you may never have known. The museums are described as being informative and some of the ‘best’ people have ever seen.

One person who visited the Mauritshuis Royal Picture Gallery wrote a review: “Of all the traditional art museums on our trip, this was my favourite. The building itself was beautiful and interesting.”

One person on TripAdvisor who visited said: “A very enjoyable seaside area with a pier and lots of shops, bars, and restaurants along the seafront. The beach has a boardwalk that makes it very easy to walk along and enjoy the sand and sea. The pier is also very nice to stroll along and has great views of the North Netherlands coastline.”

A tram from Hague Centraal Train will take you directly to the beach making it easily accessible. The Hague is very popular with tourists and it offers a range of cuisines from the Mediterranean such as Villa Coucou to local Dutch cuisines like Restaurant Capriole Café that gives you stunning canal side views as well as delicious food.

How to get there from London

Getting to The Hague is relatively straightforward. You can get a flight to Amsterdam or a direct Eurostar train from St Pancras followed by a train to The Hague. You can book flights to Amsterdam via easyJetBritish Airways, or KLM.
