JUNO BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — Steven Reinhardt was bit by a shark while swimming in rough waters at Juno Beach on November 5.
For Reinhardt, it started like any other day.
“A couple of times a week, I go to the beach for a 30-minute run, 30-minute swim, and a 45-minute run back,” said Reinhardt.
About 100 yards from shore, he started to feel something out of the ordinary.
Shark bite survivor, Steven Reinhardt will continue physical therapy and will regain full function in his right hand. Alexis Cruz reports. (WPEC)
“I just felt something hit my arm and thrash it. I lift my arm up and it looked like a Halloween prop,” said Reinhardt.
He would soon learn he was bitten by a shark and though he was in excruciating pain, he knew he had to act fast.
Reinhardt made it to shore and was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital.
Reinhardt had to undergo two surgeries on his arm and skin grafting on his leg.
“I just felt something hit my arm and thrash it. I lift my arm up and it looked like a Halloween prop,” said Reinhardt. (WPEC)
Doctors, emergency responders, and Reinhardt himself agree the outcome could have been much worse.
“I’m just so lucky and the doctors did a great job, I’m gonna have in the mobility my hands incredible. I really didn’t think I’d have this,” said Reinhardt.
