Minneapolis Parks and Recreation has closed two beaches due to elevated E. coli levels in the water.
The department announced Tuesday evening that the Thomas Beach at the southwest end of Bde Maka Ska and Lake Hiawatha Beach are temporarily closed after routine water monitoring found E. coli levels that exceeded state guidelines.
“There are no reports of any illness from swimmers at either beach; however, the MPRB proactively closes beaches if bacteria levels exceed state guidelines,” it said.
All other park board-run beaches are open in Minneapolis.
People are advised not to swim in water if they or their children have diarrhea or are sick, and suggest swimmers endeavor to avoid getting lake water in their mouths.
It comes after dozens of people were sickened with norovirus after swimming at Schulze Beach at Lebanon Hills Regional Park earlier this month.
