The storm “Poly” has passed over Schleswig-Holstein. However, the gusts were not as severe as originally expected. Nevertheless, there were obstacles in rail traffic and on the roads.
“Poly” has blown through the north vigorously. On Wednesday afternoon there were hurricane-like gusts, especially on the west coast. On Heligoland (Pinneberg district), the storm tore off a house facade according to NDR information. In the meantime, the storm has moved towards Denmark. The storm warning of hurricane gusts for the North Sea coast in Schleswig-Holstein was in effect until 10 p.m.
Nordbahn ceased traffic
Until the early evening there were obstructions on individual roads and in rail traffic – for example on the marching railway line. The Northern Railway even stopped operating completely after trees fell on the rails. A replacement bus service has been set up, as the company announced on its website. According to the information, there will also be delays and cancellations on the routes of the RB61, RB63, RB71 and RB82 on Thursday morning. The route still has to be cleared of fallen trees, they say.
Fewer bets than feared
The control centers in the country had a lot to do. Branches have fallen or trees have fallen in many places. On the 210 Autobahn, the fire brigade had to move out several times because trees had fallen on the road. In total there were almost 400 operations for the fire brigades in the state – almost half of them were in the districts of Dithmarschen, Steinburg, Pinneberg and Segeberg. According to the police, there were no injuries. Not even when a gust of wind hit a car near Büsum (Dithmarschen district), which slid into the ditch. In the state capital and the districts of Plön and Rendsburg-Eckernförde, the control center counted a total of 84 operations – mostly because of fallen trees or fallen branches.
In a preliminary assessment, the police in Schleswig-Holstein spoke of a non-dramatic situation. “It’s been relatively quiet so far – contrary to what we expected,” said a police spokeswoman in Flensburg in the early evening.
Events canceled as a precaution
Because of the previously issued severe weather warning, many facilities in the north remained closed. In addition, many events have been canceled – such as the open-air summer musical “Much Ado About Nothing” in Kiel-Holtenau. The Multivan Windsurf Cup in St. Peter-Ording (Nordfriesland district) will not start until Friday due to the storm. The Wyker Dampfschiffs-Reederei canceled all departures to and from the Halligen planned after 1 p.m. on Wednesday. At the Europa-Universität Flensburg, all exams that were to take place after 12 p.m. were canceled due to the storm.
So “Poly” didn’t hit Schleswig-Holstein as hard as feared. The situation is different in Lower Saxony and the Netherlands. Two women were killed by fallen trees in the Emsland district of Lower Saxony and Haarlem in the Netherlands.
