Sutton-on-Sea has a spacious, clean sandy beach and offers a quieter seaside experience than other nearby resorts
With the nights getting longer and the temperatures perking up – slowly but surely – it won’t be long before the summer is here. Perhaps you’re planning a summer getaway abroad, but don’t forget that there are plenty of great places to visit across Britain as well.
Although Derby isn’t exactly known for its beaches – for obvious reasons – there are some good ones which are only a couple of hours away by car. One of these can be found at Sutton-on-Sea, on Lincolnshire’s East Coast, just under 15 miles north of Skegness.
Sutton-on-Sea is a drive of roughly two hours and 34 minutes from Derby, making it a relatively easy destination to reach by car. It is well known for its long, sandy beach, a Blue Flag award winner, often with plenty of space to stretch your legs along the golden sands.
The beach is dog-friendly, though dogs are not permitted on the central beach between May 1 and September 30, and are required to be kept on a lead in adjacent areas. There is also lifeguard cover at Sutton-on-Sea from June to September.
The village of Sutton-on-Sea itself, meanwhile, has retained much of its traditional charm as a classic English seaside resort. It is quieter than the nearby town of Mablethorpe, making it a popular destination for people looking for something a little more laid-back.
Local attractions include a small number of pubs and restaurants, including a beach bar right on the seafront, serving food and drink. However, as Sutton-on-Sea is smaller and quieter than Mablethorpe or Skegness – making it something of a hidden gem – it does not offer the kind of funfairs and arcades you can find at other, larger seaside destinations.
The village has two main car parks for visitors. According to Parkopedia, the Broadway car park has 120 spaces while the nearby Marine Avenue car park has 25 spaces, both car parks being located only a short walk away from the beach.
So, if you’re looking specifically for a spacious and pristine beach in a quiet location, Sutton-on-Sea could be the ideal choice for you this spring and summer. There are also beach chalets available to rent, priced at £20 per day (£25 in the high season).
