The ‘unspoiled’ stunning beach with sand dunes just an hour from Yorkshire

Crimdon Beach near Hartlepool is dog friendly and offers wide views of the ocean

The Yorkshire coast is full of wonderful beaches on our long coastline – but just outside Yorkshire also has a lot to offer for a seaside day out.

Heading up from the top of the Yorkshire coast to the North East, there are plenty of beautiful stretches of coast perfect for a day out. Crimdon Beach is found just north of Hartlepool, on the southern end of Durham’s Heritage Coast.

It’s about an hours drive from parts of North Yorkshire like Whitby, Ripon and Richmond, and about an hour and a half from Leeds. If you’re at the very top of North Yorkshire near Redcar, it’s just a hop over the River Tees to reach it.

A popular day trip location in the past, Crimdon beach is now much quieter. It’s open to dogs year-round, and is mostly frequented by visitors to the Crimdon holiday caravan parks.

Durham Heritage Coast advises birdwatchers Crimdon is the spot to see rare seabird the Little Tern. The water quality at Crimdon is rated as excellent based on its most recent classification.

Andy J writes on TripAdvisor: “Beautiful sandy beach. Lovely even when the weathers not great. With a lovely café even open on Mondays! Here is great for taking photos.”

Similarly, Jane G said: “Lovely beach with sand dunes to rest in. Great for walking miles with open scenery. Sea looked great but didn’t try as far to chilly!”

The Beach Guide advises clifftops are found at the northern end of the beach, while on the southern end you can find sand dunes. The Little Terns usually head back to Africa with their young at the end of summer – volunteers are usually available during the breeding season to chat to birdwatchers about the colony at Crimdon.

Stuart H said: “This was really, really busy during the 1950’s/60’s (interesting sign boards containing historic photographs/information) and yet nowadays id quiet and unspoiled. A must visit for those interested in sea birds and general nature.”

And hikerRotherham said of the beach: “From Crimdon lovely views back to Hartlepool and Sunderland. You can walk back along this stunning beach by the sand dunes back to Old Hartlepool either on the beach or on the cliff tops”
