SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – Strong east winds will create choppy conditions on the waters this weekend. Winds will hit 15 to 20 knots creating 2 to 4 foot seas, possibly a little higher.
The steady east wind will also cover the beaches, so beach balls and even trash will blow around easily. The beach umbrella will need to be extra secure.
This is our first weekend with the UV Index at 11, in the Extreme category. Here is the guidance from NOAA for the Extreme category:
- A UV Index reading of 11 or higher means extreme risk of harm from unprotected sun exposure.
- Apply sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 liberally every 2 hours.
- Try to avoid sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
- Take all precautions. Unprotected skin can burn in minutes. Beachgoers should know that white sand and other bright surfaces reflect UV and will increase UV exposure.
- Seek shade, cover up, wear a hat and sunglasses, and use sunscreen.
