Yorkshire’s year-round dog-walker utopia

As May begins, beaches across the Yorkshire Coast stop allowing dogs as more and more tourists head to the coast for days out.

Yorkshire beaches that dogs have been banned from as of May 1 include Bridlington, Scarborough and Whitby. Dogs won’t be allowed back to beaches with seasonal bans in place until September 30.

But there are still several Yorkshire beaches that welcome dogs and dog walkers year round. One of those is Fraisthorpe Beach, only a few miles south of Bridlington in East Yorkshire.

Fraisthorpe Beach is reached by a narrow winding road down from tiny Fraisthorpe village, just off the A165. It offers a wide, flat expanse of sand (and some pebbles) on the edge of the North Sea where dogs roam freely.

Bridlington can be seen looking north up the beach, which is backed by low, chalky cliffs. Atop the cliffs you’ll also find a paying car park.

Despite strong winds and crashing waves, Fraisthorpe Beach was awash with dog of all breeds and sizes on May 4, as owners readjusted to the new beach rules for dogs. Refreshment is available at the Cow Shed, found just behind the beach.

On nicer days, visitors swim in the water too. Even with the temperamental weather, the views across the coastline towards Flamborough head are stunning.

“Nice sands excellent for dog walk at low tide, plenty of room on a clear crisp February morning. The dog loved it,” says Dusty M in a TripAdvisor review.

Rebecca K added: “Beautiful beach with convenient parking. Great for dog walking.”
